The Lamplighters open their 60th Anniversary Season with Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado, arguably the most popular opera ever written in the English language. A playful tale set in a make-believe Japanese town where flirting is a capital offense, The Mikado is actually a playful satire on Victorian British society. In a time when flirting is a capital offense, wandering minstrel Nanki-Poo has fallen in love with the beautiful Yum-Yum, fiancée to the recently appointed Lord High Executioner Ko-Ko. When the Mikado, emperor of Japan, demands the execution of Ko-Ko, and Nanki-Poo volunteers to take Ko-Ko’s place under the condition that he first be allowed to marry Yum-Yum, chaos, desperation, and comical mayhem ensue. Favorite songs include “Three little maids”, “I’ve got a little list”, and “Tit-willow”. Live orchestra, gorgeous sets and costumes, and the amazing voices of the Lamplighters – long considered one of the best Gilbert & Sullivan producers in the world!
